U.S. Considers Arming Syrian Rebels
The link above is of a Youtube video reporting that the U.S. is considering sending weapons to the rebels of Syria. The extremists are believed to be connected to al- Qaeda, the same terrorists group responsible for the September 11th attacks. The fighters are also believed to be moving out of neighboring Iraq and supporting the Syrian uprising against Asad. Opponents to the move say that supporting the Syrian rebels would help them overthrow the government, thereby creating a safe haven for al- Qaeda members to plan attacks against their enemies. While the U.S. hasn't committed to a decision, a move to arm these rebels would no doubt create more bloodshed and help bring down the regime.
I believe that this decision should undoubtedly be an easy one. Like Emily said, looking to the past for future decisions is a key element. Sending weapons to the rebels in Syria may have its benefits, but if we are trying to have minimal causalities, this is not the way to go about it. I am curious to see what the overall decision will be.
ReplyDeleteI partly agree, but partly disagree. Should someone intervene and supply the rebels with weapons? Yes. Should it be us? No, at least not directly. Weapons and fighters have been flowing into Syria from countries with many rebel sympathizers, such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq. If anything, we should just keep our hands clear direct intervention, and allow the other countries in the region to deal with the future of their neighbor.
