Britain considers blocking Syria’s Olympic head, an Assad aide, from attending London Olympics

According to the Washington Post, Britain is considering barring Syria's Olympic head, General Mowaffak Joumaa from attending the upcoming Olympic games that will take place this summer in London.  They are making this consideration due to his association as an aide to Syrian President, Bashar Assad.  While the Olympic officials can review individual cases and determine whether or not to allow the people in question to attend the games, Joumaa is not on the list of those who are banned from traveling, as Assad is.  As of now, Joumaa has stated that he still has plans to attend the Games.

  1. I wonder how much an effect this will have on Assad's regime. Banning Jouma may just be the start. It isn't the first time the Olympics has banned a country for government violation of human rights. By taking away the country's slot in the upcoming games will not only upset fans but will also effect the athletes who have trained to compete.

  2. I find this post extremely interesting because this is the first time I am hearing of this proposal. In the case that Joumaa is banned, I believe that it will cause an array of effects in the Assad regime. The Olympics is world wide event and although it is not the first time a country is banned, it is doubtful that the Assad Regime will take it lightly.
